Natural gas is delivered by pipeline.
Local distribution companies (gas utilities) take bulk gas piped to them by wholesalers.
The distributors then pump it into a distribution main (at reduced pressure) and deliver it to service lines connected directly to individual customers. 
Rudyard Kipling visited Medicine Hat, AB in 1889. Astounded by the city's natural gas streetlamps which burned 24/7 and learning of their vast reservoir, he exclaimed: "All hell for a basement, eh?"
In 2010, pipelines consumed 25,028,260 GJ and emitted 1,570,285 GHGs tonnes.
