The mining sector includes industries that extract basic commodities from the ground. In Alberta, coal mining is the only significant activity in this sector.

In 2010, the mining sector in Alberta
consumed 174,705,700 GJ and
emitted 13,836,180 GHG tonnes.

About 70% of the coal mined in Alberta is used for electricity generation.  The rest is exported to Asia (mainly South Korea and Japan).  The coal is primarily mined on the surface using large vehicles, but oil only makes up 6.63% of the total energy consumed.  Electricity is the major source of energy for this sector (1.57%).
