Natural gas is the source of 43.28% of the energy consumed by individuals in Alberta. Nearly all households use natural gas to heat their homes (91.61%) and water (94.02%). A few also use natural gas for cooking.  Natural gas is also being used by some bus and rail companies for public transportation.
In 2010, the residential sector
consumed 153,738,400 GJ of natural gas and
emitted 11,278,900 GHG tonnes.

The other 8.39% of home furnaces? Electricity is often used (7.68%), but there are other choices too … oil, geothermal, solar and wood, for example.
