In Alberta, virtually all hot water heaters (94.02%) consist of a storage tank heated with natural gas, ignited by a pilot light that burns continuously.  However, some households use electricity (5.23%) or oil (0.46%) to heat water.

On average in 2010, a household's water heating
consumed 22.33 GJ and
emitted 1.90 GHG tonnes.
