In Ontario, natural gas is used to heat 83.43% of all commercial and institutional buildings. Some use hot water heating, and the water is heated by natural gas. Electricity, used for both heating and cooling, is the other primary source of energy (15.74%).

In 2010, space heating and cooling in this sector
consumed 203,799,900 GJ and
emitted 11,779,080 GHG tonnes.
