Basically we rely on three sources of crude oil for consumption in Canada: conventional, unconventional (oil sands, offshore oil and shale oil) and imported oil.  Rather than importing crude oil, Prince Edward Island purchases refined petroleum products.
 
Conventional and offshore oil is produced from wells. Oil sands are either surface mined or gathered from underground reservoirs.
